Beleaguered Woods

Game made for a 15-week game development studio. Worked in a team of 6 where I was in charge of project management as well as assisting with UI and effects implementation. Beleaguered Woods is a single player game using Unreal Engine 4. Explore the woods as you try to regain your power and hunt down the malevolent ghosts tormenting the forest.

What would you do if you had more time?

Our original concept was to have it be more of a multiplayer hide-and-seek concept that we ended up cutting early in development. If we had more time I would have loved to have included a multiplayer mode, however, from my last experience with multiplayer in Unreal Engine I’m glad that we agreed to scrap it to focus on the core game design.

What would you do differently next time?

Honestly I’m very proud of what our team was able to accomplish. If I were to do things differently I would change our task tracking software. We went with a different website that someone on the team suggested and, while it was good to explore and learn, the team’s unfamiliarity with the tool (including myself) led to it not being used. Making sure to have a good task tracking tool would have helped with communication and aligning priorities.

What did you learn?

I learned more about Unreal Engine’s systems, specifically blueprints and particle effects. It was definitely interesting going out of my comfort zone learning more about UI and effects, but I enjoyed learning more and experimenting with the tools. I’m glad I was able to use my knowledge from the past studios to better scope this project and I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish within the 15 week development period.
