Dyr

Game made for a 5-week course, had to work with the theme “Flow”. Worked in a team of 5 where I was in charge of project management and programming. 2D game using the Unity engine, platformer where you must collect orbs of light to fix the planet. Game made is a proof of concept with the potential of becoming multi-level.

Project Post Mortem

What would you do if you had more time?

This game was developed as a 1 level prototype of a full game. Provided with more time, I would love to take this project & expand on the universe. We came up with a great world lore & plot that we were unable to convey in this prototype. Given more time, I would love to develop a prologue introducing the player to the protagonist & the plot, as well as developing additional levels getting the protagonist to the end of the story.

What would you do differently next time?

I think next time if I were to develop this game I would focus more on the UI & scale of the game. Reflecting back, our UI & character on the screen is too small in comparison to the environment. Our platformer ended up being a bit more challenging than expected to other players, since we created it we had a better sense of how to beat it. Next time I would do more playtesting & get more feedback on the mechanics & visuals.

What did you learn?

I was able to learn a lot about the Unity engine. We had challenges with incorporating the animated cutscenes & the parallax effect, both of which I was able to further research & help implement into our game. I was also able to learn more about sprite sheets & animating 2D characters based on parameters. This project was our first in-school education on video game development so we were able to learn a lot through the few weeks we had in the course.
